LASU students decry fees increment

BY CHIDINMA OGU (WHILE IN VANGUARD NEWSPAPER)
LAGOS State University Student’s Union, (LASUSU) has called on the state governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, and other stakeholders in the institution to prevail on the school management to reduce the seven hundred and twenty-five percent (725%) increment in their school fees as announced recently.
Speaking at a news briefing, Monday, at the School of Medicine, Ikeja, the Student’s Union President, Durojaiye Akeem Olalekan said they were shocked that fresh arts and education students of LASU who used to pay N25,000 will henceforth be paying N193,750; while Social Management Sciences students will now pay N223,750. Fresh students of the College of Medicine students are now expected to pay N348,750.
Durojaiye said: “We the Student’s Unions bring to the notice of the State Government and the general public that eighty percent of LASU students and prospective students are indigent and come from humble background. They cannot even afford a daily three square meal.
Meanwhile, our parents are petty traders and civil servants awaiting the implementation of the N18,000 minimum wage. How many months salary will sum up to N348,750 for a medical student in a family of five.”
Students Union Public Relation Officer, Azeez Olateji said: “When has LASU become a profit oriented venture instead of an avenue to cater for the indigent students of Lagos State and Nigeria at large. This is not in tandem with the state ruling party’s ideology of free and quality of education for all.
This is contrary to what is obtainable in other State Universities controlled by the Action Congress of Nigeria.”
